Veriff and BVG Jelbi: from compliance to seamless UX with a fully integrated mobility-as-a-service platform
BVG Jelbi is Berlin’s all-in-one mobility app, combining public transport, taxis, carsharing, scooters, bikes, and more in one place. With a single account, verification, and payment method, it makes getting around Berlin and Brandenburg simple for residents and tourists alike.
About BVG Jelbi
BVG Jelbi is Berlin’s all-in-one app for public transit and transportation. Servicing Berlin and Brandenburg, BVG Jelbi allows residents and visitors to use Berlin’s public transport, taxis, carsharing, e-scooter, moped, or bike at the touch of a button.
Having celebrated its five-year anniversary in 2024, BVG Jelbi is now the established one-stop-shop for the city’s travel needs, as Claudia Sikora, Team Lead at BVG Jelbi explained: “Jelbi is a mobility platform that brings together all sorts of forms of transportation all in just in one app. So you have public transport, you have car sharing, you have e-mopeds, you have bikes, you even have taxis.
“Our users are primarily in Berlin and Brandenburg, but, as you can imagine, we have a lot of tourists in Berlin, and they are looking for convenience – so you have one app, you have just one account, you have just one verification, and one payment method. All the mobility you actually need in one place, so no juggling from six seven apps.”
We have been working with Veriff since day one to meet all the regulatory standards here and that speaks volumes about the partnerships.
What business problem did Veriff solve for BVG Jelbi?
BVG Jelbi partnered with Veriff from the app’s inception in 2019. The initial driver for the relationship was to ensure the app satisfied stringent regulatory requirements in place across the European Union.
“The mobility space is really heavily regulated, especially when it comes to car sharing,” Sikora said. “We have several layers we need to meet. First, the fundamental requirement is to verify driver’s licenses for everyone who wants to access car sharing. That’s not optional.
“Then we have GDPR requirements for how we handle and process this personal data, which is particularly important to us as a public company, so we take it really, really seriously.
“But we have been working with Veriff since day one to meet all the regulatory standards here and that speaks volumes about the partnerships.”
What made the difference to BVG Jelbi when choosing Veriff?
Veriff’s deep understanding of the mobility space and the regulatory landscape, combined with the way fraud data is delivered and acted upon, were highlighted as the main factors that helped Veriff stand out from the competition.
“I mentioned the regulatory understanding before, but that was such a big factor in us choosing to work with Veriff,” Sikora explained.
“But what is especially important for us is that Veriff is not just providing a pass and fail verification service, but they also extract the document information we need. That allows us to use the data for platform-side fraud prevention measures. So it has become an integrated part of our security ecosystem.

“Veriff’s team really understands the mobility space and the specific challenges they have evolved alongside us. Fraud trends are always changing and you need a partner who can adapt with you.”
What was the impact of implementing Veriff?
BVG Jelbi’s team are hyper focussed on user experience and working tirelessly to constantly improve the UX of their app. The partnership with Veriff has been the biggest help on that front.
“What Veriff has helped us to achieve is to make the whole verification process feel really seamless while also maintaining high security standards,” Sikora said.
“The technology is super accurate but also works quickly enough that the user doesn’t feel as though they are jumping through hoops. It’s also sophisticated enough so you catch fraudulent attempts.
“Working with Veriff means we are constantly monitoring the balance that we are keeping here, so looking at completion rates, user feedback, time to verification, and also fraud detection rates. So it’s not a one-time decision, it’s an ongoing optimization between us and Veriff that is helping to constantly make our service better.”
But the real impact has come in how the partnership has evolved to help BVG Jelbi adjust to the changing nature of online fraud.
“Fraud has changed dramatically,” Sikora said. “In the early days, we saw individuals trying their luck, now it is organized groups with AI and deepfakes. Fraud does not hit us constantly; it comes in waves with new tactics each time. Just when you have defended against one approach, they have already moved on.That evolution really shows why you need a partner who stays ahead of these trends.”
